The Mitsubishi Outlander Is No-Frills Affordable Driving

Vehicle Overview

With no flash or fanfare, the Mitsubishi Outlander gets the job done as a compact crossover SUV. Still, in its third generation of production, the Outlander is that rare small crossover SUV that's available as a three-row vehicle. Plus, it is available in five trims and adds a sixth for this model year to appeal to a wider range of customers around Washington DC and Alexandria.

Standard Equipment

Accommodating up to seven people, the Mitsubishi Outlander provides more seating capacity than most vehicles in its class. Entering the vehicle is very convenient; simply press the key fob. The dashboard contains climate controls for the driver and front-seat passenger for heating and cooling customization. And entertainment flows from a six-speaker stereo system accompanied by an AM/FM radio tuner with HD Radio technology, Bluetooth hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, a USB port for hooking up portable devices, and a 7-inch display screen.

Safety Features

For restraint and cushioning in the event of a crash, the Mitsubishi Outlander provides a driver's knee airbag, two front impact airbags, two front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and two roof-mounted side curtain airbags. Also standard are a rearview camera, vehicle stability control, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, LED daytime running lights, hill start assist, and an anti-theft system.

Performance

Powering the Mitsubishi Outlander is a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder engine with 166 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. This engine is hitched to a continuously variable transmission on the other trims. With a front-engine front-wheel-drive layout, the Outlander gets good gas-mileage numbers: 25 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway-a perfect option for your commute from Arlington to Manassas.

Trim Configurations

Most customers would do great with the SE. Although it's only one step up from the base-level ES, it is loaded with enhancements that make it a valuable trim to choose. Seating and steering comfort is amplified with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, 8-way power adjustability on the driver's seat, and the replacement of fabric with combination soft-touch seating surfaces. Infotainment gets a boost with voice recognition technology, a pair of USB ports added behind the front seats for charging mobile devices, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, a three-month trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio, and an 8-inch display screen instead of the 7-inch. You can now open the doors by just having the key fob instead of pressing it, and a push-button is next to the steering wheel to start the engine. And the rearview mirror dims headlight glare and is accompanied by a universal receiver for remote-controlling home features such as garage doors and security systems. Driver assistance makes a debut here: with forward collision mitigation, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and automatic high beams.

The Limited Edition and Special Edition-also referred to as LE and SP, respectively-are limited-quantity models that stand out with some exterior touches such as trim-specific badging and black finish on some exterior features. The LE is where Mitsubishi introduces roof rails, as well as blind-spot warning with lane change assist and rear-cross traffic alert. The SP, which is new for this model year, stands out from its LE counterpart with more black-finished exterior features. However, it loses forward collision mitigation with pedestrian detection.

For a more luxurious feel, go with at least the SEL, which introduces leather seat trim and steering-wheel heating. The top-level trim, though, is the GT. It is the only trim level with standard all-wheel-drive to maximize tire grip on the road (it's optional on the others). The GT also has a completely different powertrain, which consists of a 3.0-liter V6 with 224 horsepower and 215 lb-ft of torque and a 6-speed automatic transmission for better acceleration ability and increased max towing ability from 1,500 lbs. to 3,500 lbs. Added on GT are two safety features: adaptive cruise control to help set a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front of you; and a multi-view camera system in place of the rearview camera for a 360-degree viewing perspective.
