With the Clean Vehicle Tax Credit, drivers can upgrade their journey in an electrified vehicle without paying new-car prices.
This credit began on January 1, 2023. It covers vehicles that are at least two years old in the current calendar year. To qualify, the electrified vehicle must be a used electric vehicle (EV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), or fuel-cell vehicle (FCV) from a licensed dealership priced at $25,000 or less.

How the Clean Vehicle Tax Credit Works
Many tax credits only apply when you file your taxes. With the Clean Vehicle Tax Credit, you don't have to wait until then. Instead, this point-of-sale tax credit lets you enjoy outstanding savings today.
When you purchase a qualifying EV, PHEV, or FCV with a sale price that's under $25,000 and at least two years old as of the current year, you can receive 30% off the vehicle's sale price with a maximum of up to $4,000.
Who Qualifies for the Clean Vehicle Tax Credit?
- Owners who purchased the vehicle for personal use, not for resale
- Not the original (new) vehicle owner
- Not eligible to be claimed as a dependent on another's tax return
- Now have claimed another used clean vehicle credit in three years before the purchase date
- Your modified adjusted gross income may not exceed:
- $150,000 for married filing jointly or a surviving spouse
- $112,500 for heads of households
- $75,000 for all other filers
What Vehicles Qualify for the Clean Vehicle Credit?
- Have a sale price of $25,000 or less
- Have a model year at least two years earlier than the current calendar year when you purchase it
- Be an eligible FCV, PHEV, or EV with a battery capacity of at least 7 kWh
- Not have been transferred after August 16, 2022, to a qualified buyer
- Have a GVWR of less than 14,000 pounds
- Be for use primarily in the United States
